A Message from Our Chairman: Crazy Markets Continue Providing Challenges

With the recent volatility in the commodities markets and the swift market increases, it has been impossible to keep up with these costs.  Our customers would like lead time so they can be on top of new pricing – so would we!  Having an experienced buyer helps, but none of us have ever seen this kind of broad market increases across the entire spectrum of commodities and related products.

Maybe some of you remember the sugar crisis of the 1970’s, when for about three weeks prices would go up $2-$5 everyday for a hundred pound bag.  That was a challenge, but at least that was only sugar.  The present situation means that all of us in the baking industry need to keep a close eye on all our costs and be more closely linked into our customers’ changing needs.

Regardless of present challenges, bakery remains a great industry.  When the price of meats or other food items hit the ceiling – consumers can still stretch their food budgets and keep families delighted with a great bread or delicious dessert. For more than 4,000 years, bakery has helped feed the world and we don’t expect that to change any time soon.

Dawn will continue looking for new and better ways to provide our customers with taste-tempting products and working hard to help keep bakery sales increasing for you.  In this way, our Three Pillars – We know. We care. We can help^SM– are working for our valued customers everyday.
