‘Lockdown’ measures including the closure of restaurants, cafes, hotels and bars for the foreseeable future and the request for everyone to stay at home have meant that ‘staying in’ is now the new ‘going out’. This has had a devastating effect on the foodservice sector although many pubs and restaurants have successfully diversified their business model to focus on takeaways to cater for the thousands now eating at home. This will enable them to bring in some income at least to keep their businesses going.
Closure of foodservice outlets isn’t just having a major effect on business operators, but on those businesses, which supply them too. Many caterers work in partnership with their delivered wholesale company as a ‘one stop shop’ for fresh produce and meat as well as ambient products. Wholesale companies provide a vital link in food distribution both into foodservice and retail.
The Federation of Wholesale Distributors (FWD) has reported that 50 foodservice delivery wholesalers have already ceased trading, but others have the resources to diversify their business model by delivering direct to consumers. Many wholesalers have set up on-line ‘click and collect’ services in a matter of weeks with consumers being able to purchase boxes of quality meat, vegetables and store cupboard ingredients. Other wholesalers have collaborated with supermarket retailers to offer support including share of stock, people and fleet vehicles and delivery.
Dawn has many important customers in the wholesale sector, and we applaud their resolution and innovation at this really difficult time.
If you are struggling to get a delivery slot from your regular supermarket, try these delivery wholesalers who are offering their products direct to consumers. After all, #weareinthistogether
